Ronald MacDonald Room and House

The Ronald McDonald Family Room and the Ronald McDonald House are available to support families. Each location is staffed by volunteers who will do their best to make your childs stay at the hospital a little easier. These services are supported by donations and are always free to families in need. Although a small amount is suggested for families who stay at the House, and are financially able to donate.

The Family Room is open to all families of patients admitted to the Children’s Hospital and is open from 9am to 9pm every day, including weekends (hours and services may be limited secondary to COVID-19 restrictions; please see website for most current information). The room is located on the third level of Children’s Hospital in the Yellow Deer Zone.

The Family Room offers showers, laundry facilities, a kitchen for the use of families and a dining room to eat your meal, a living room and play space, a quiet area in which you can take a nap and limited overnight accommodations. Sleeping rooms are prioritized for families with critically ill children in the intensive care units but may be available to other families as space allows. Parents may request an overnight room through their childs nurse or social worker.

Our Ronald McDonald House is located at 566 Bannatyne Avenue, just two blocks from Children’s Hospital with transportation provided to and from the hospital. This house is designed to be a “home away from home” and supports families who live more than 50 km away from Children’s Hospital.

The house is designed for longer stays, with 14 bedrooms which can accommodate up to five people (two adults and three children) and a shared kitchen with assigned space for each family to store food in the cupboards and refrigerator/freezer. Breakfast and some lunches and dinners are provided. Towels and linens are supplied as well as laundry facilities. There are lounges with televisions, a games room, play areas, free wireless internet access, and a fitness and exercise room. A vehicle is provided to run errands if needed.

Requests for accommodation are accepted based on availability, your childs medical condition and how far away you live from the hospital.  You may ask to be placed on a waiting list if you know in advance when you will need to stay at the house. Requests should include a referral from hospital staff. The cost to stay at the house is a suggested donation of $10 per night, but no family will be turned away if financial hardship makes this donation difficult.
