Rights and Responsibilities
Consent to treatment / Informed consent
While your child is in hospital, specific investigative and treatment procedures may be necessary. Before signing a consent form, you should have information about and understand what will be done; the purpose, expected benefits, potential complications, alternatives and consequences of not proceeding with the recommended procedure. If you have questions regarding consent, please discuss this with your physician.
Privacy and Confidentiality
Manitoba’s Personal Health Information Act (PHIA) protects information about your child and their care. Everyone who works at HSC, including students and volunteers, will respect your privacy.
You have the right to view your child’s chart to see what care we are currently providing to you at HSC. Please ask your unit staff directly and we will make this information available to you within 24 hours.
If you would like to view or request copies of information about your child’s care after discharge, we will provide the opportunity to you as soon as possible within 30 days.
If you would like to know more about your rights under the Personal Health Information Act, please ask the individuals caring for you, or visit www.gov.mb.ca/health/phia/index.html. You may also contact the HSC Privacy Officer at (204) 787-1050.
