Pediatric Nephrology

The section of Pediatric Nephrology is based at HSC-Winnipeg Children’s Hospital and provides antenatal and pediatric care for patients with conditions affecting the kidneys and urinary tract. We see patients from Manitoba, Northwestern Ontario, Northwest Teratories and Nunavut. Our multidisciplinary team is made up of nephrologists, nurse clinicians and nurses, dialysis nurses, a social worker, pharmacist, dietitian, transplant coordinator, and administrative staff.  We provide collaborative care for over 4000 patients every year, including consultation at St. Boniface Hospital and outreach clinics to Thompson General Hospital. We provide comprehensive services such as kidney biopsy, peritoneal dialysis, hemodialysis, and kidney transplantation, and run specialty clinics in renal genetics, type 2 diabetes with kidney disease, kidney stones, chronic kidney disease, cardiac transplant with kidney disease, and vasculitis.

What We Do

The practice of pediatric nephrology involves the diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting the kidneys and urinary tract. This includes high blood pressure, fluid and electrolyte disorders, nephrotic syndrome, vasculitis, and congenital and genetic disorders of the kidneys and urinary tract.  We manage children in kidney failure with acute dialysis (PD, HD and CRRT) and chronic dialysis (PD, HD). We offer kidney transplantation to children within our catchment area, in collaboration with Transplant Manitoba.  We work collaboratively with Laboratory Medicine and Diagnostic Imaging to assess kidney health, and often with other medical and surgical specialties managing the whole-body effects of kidney disease. Manitoba’s only pediatric hemodialysis unit is run through our section, as well as an active renal transplant program that performs the only pediatric solid organ transplants in Manitoba. Section members have national impact through administrative leadership through Shared Health, the Canadian Association of Pediatric Nephrology, the Canadian Society of Transplantation, and the International Pediatric Nephrology Association.

Our Programs

Our program is based at the HSC-Winnipeg Children’s Hospital. Our outpatient ambulatory clinics, ambulatory blood pressure assessments, dialysis and transplant programs are all located in Clinic Y. We utilize diagnostic imaging which is located nearby in the Diagnostic Centre of Excellence, and we have an active inpatient consultation service on the general clinical teaching units, NICUs and PICU.  We prescribe and support CRRT for critically ill patients in the ICUs, and acute and chronic dialysis for both inpatients and outpatients.

How to Refer a Patient

We accept referrals from all PCP’s (family doctors, pediatricians, and midwives). Referrals should be sent to Pediatric Nephrology, where the referral will be triaged to the appropriate nephrology clinic. Elective outpatient referrals can be sent by fax or mail:

We are an active participant in the North American Pediatric Renal Transplantation Consortium (NAPRTCS), the Canadian Organ Replacement Registry (CORR) and the CanSOLVE-CKD research network involving Pediatric Nephrology member centers in the Canadian Association of Pediatric Nephrologists (CAPN). Section members hold over $2 million in competitive national funding for research and are participating in industry sponsored studies.
